Michelle joined IIP in December 2011. She holds a B.A. from UW-Madison in Japanese with certificates in Global Cultures and Japanese for Engineers. She worked in the Center for European Studies and as a peer advisor in International Academic Programs as an undergraduate. A Madison native, she studied abroad in Japan twice during high school and spent her junior year of college at Keio University in Tokyo. She also participated in the Irish Studies Summer School in Dublin, Ireland. After graduation Michelle did software quality assurance at Epic before moving to Boston to pursue an M.A. in Intercultural Relations at Lesley University. She worked at MIT as the MIT-Japan Program Manager, coordinating student internships in Japan for almost three years prior to returning to Madison to join IIP.
Carly Stingl, Advisor & Program Coordinator
Carly joined IIP in spring 2014 as a graduate intern developing internships in Latin America & Spain and full-time in summer 2014 as an Advisor and Program Coordinator. She is a UW alumna with a Masters degree in Spanish literature and a BA in Spanish, LACIS and Journalism. Carly first became interested in Spain after studying abroad in Madrid her senior year of high school; while at UW she also studied abroad in Quito, Ecuador in addition to doing an international journalism internship in Buenos Aires, Argentina at a trilingual online magazine. She returned to the Southern Cone to earn her Masters in Journalism from La Universidad Torcuato di Tella in Buenos Aires where she worked at one of the country’s leading newspapers, La Nación, in addition to serving as an advisor and public relations associate for a company that brought students from the U.S. to do media internships in Argentina. Carly then moved back to Madrid, Spain for three years where she taught English and wrote freelance articles in economics, arts and gastronomy for different media outlets.
Barbara Jedele, Advisor & Program Coordinator
Barbara joined IIP in August 2015 as an Advisor and Program Coordinator. She holds both a Master’s degree in French and International Education, as well as a Bachelor’s degree in French, German and International Studies from UW-Madison. During her graduate studies, she worked as a Student Records Coordinator at International Academic Programs (IAP) and a Graduate Language Program Coordinator at the International Learning Community’s German language floor. Barbara grew up near Munich, Germany and spent her junior year in Freiburg, Germany through UW’s Academic Year in Freiburg program. As a senior she volunteered as a German Academic Exchange Services (DAAD) Young Ambassador at UW-Madison, promoting study abroad opportunities in Germany. She also completed three internships in France, the most recent at the Agence Erasmus+ France in Bordeaux, spent a year in Turin, Italy and participated in a high school summer exchange in Russia.
Maj Fischer, International Division Interim Director of External Relations
Maj has previously served as director of IIP since its inception in February 2010. Formerly the associate director of UW-Madison’s International Academic Programs (IAP) from 1996 to 2003, Maj continued her work in international education and cross cultural exchange during her 6 year absence from UW-Madison, when she worked internationally.From 2003-2005, Maj served as associate director for the Peace Corps in Fiji, re-opening the program after its five-year hiatus. After Fiji, she moved half way (literally!) around the world to Copenhagen, Denmark, to work for The Danish Institute for Study Abroad (DIS). There she served first as a program director and then as the Director of Academics for Scandinavia’s largest organization hosting students from the U.S. and around the world. Among other duties, Maj spearheaded international service-learning efforts at DIS and has built upon that experience as director of the International Internship Program, increasing service-learning opportunities overseas for Madison undergraduates in addition to expanding access to for-profit internship opportunities.While she has lived around the world, Maj is a proud native of Wisconsin with an undergraduate degree (AB) from the University of Chicago and a Masters in Public Policy (MPP) focusing on International Development and Education Policy from Harvard’s Kennedy School of Government. She was also a Fulbright participant in Korea, a Peace Corps Volunteer in Poland, a summer intern in Brussels, and spent a year in both Finland and Sweden as an exchange student.
Angel is a fourth year senior (graduating May 2018) majoring in Journalism with a focus in Strategic Communications and pursuing a certificate in Digital Studies. Throughout her studies, she spends her time involving herself in various cultural and multi-ethnic organizations such as Korean American Student Association and Asian American InterVarsity. She has studied abroad in Seoul, South Korea and attended Yonsei University, prompting her to take 2 years of Korean. In her free time, she enjoys blogging, practicing her calligraphy and admiring pictures of corgis.
